Leadership Fellows

Leadership Fellows logo

Established in 1998, the Leadership Fellows is a personal and professional development program that develops tangible skills that students can use in their campus involvements, internships, jobs, or to even become involved on campus. Participants will gain skills through practical application, discussions, and interactive activities that they can use in multiple settings in their lives. They'll also have a lot of fun along the way!

The Leadership Fellows program at UNC Charlotte is a cohort-based program targeting upper-division students (sophomores, juniors, and non-graduating seniors) which exposes aspiring leaders to leadership skills beyond the basics.

Leadership Fellows meets weekly in the fall semester from 4-6 p.m. While the exact meeting structure will differ based on the topic being explored that day, there are some general consistencies.

  • Most meetings will begin with a warm-up activity, this can look like an energizer, ice breaker, or other activity that allows the students in the program to interact.
  • Following the warm-up activity, we will spend around 90 minutes on the curriculum. This can include completing assessments to help you improve your own awareness, information on the leadership topic, both small group and large group discussion, and application of the discussed skill when possible. For example, if we are discussing how to write dynamic bullet points on a résumé, we will have the Fellows practice using Leadership Fellows as a base.
  • At the close of the meeting, we will share any program announcements, ask Fellows to reflect on how they have been applying what they have learned, and give Fellows an opportunity to share announcements. The Fellows announcements often are events, organizational opportunities, or other happenings that students may find relevant.

During the semester, we may also bring in external groups to highlight student leader opportunities as well.

Total training will consist of 12 two-hour sessions and a weekend retreat. Training will include most or all of the following topics:

  • Public Speaking
  • Résumé Development and Interviewing
  • Creative Problem Solving
  • Professionalism and Etiquette
  • Personal Leadership Styles
  • Conflict Management
  • Resilience and Grit
  • Motivating Yourself and Others
  • Ethical Decision Making
  • Autentic Leadership
  • And more!

We survey the Fellows before the semester begins to gather feedback on the topics that are most relevant and important for their development. In this way, the curriculum has some differences each year as it reflects the needs of the group.

Leadership Fellows has both small group and large group elements. The small group pieces are led by students known as STARS peer mentors. STARS, Students Teaching and Reaching Students, are past Leadership Fellows graduates who have returned to support the operations of the program and guide students through the experience. STARS lead small groups of 4-6 Fellows, facilitating discussions, leading activities, and helping students connect their experiences to the Leadership Fellows curriculum. You can learn more about our STARS here

Each fall, the students attend an off-site, overnight retreat. We generally visit a summer camp in the Charlotte region. During the retreat, students will get to meaningfully connect with each other through small group activities, continue to learn more about leadership skills and topics, and get to have a lot of fun! We'll have board games, cards, and a screen and laptop for late night karaoke! We don't disclose too much, but the retreat is usually a programmatic highlight each fall.

For the retreat, students are expected to bring their own bedding and toiletries, but the sites have modern amenities and the cabins are furnished. Transportation, meals, and snacks are provided during the retreat.

To participate in Leadership Fellows, students must:

  • Be available on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. in the Fall Semester. This means no class or organizational conflicts during that time.
  • Attend the meetings in smart casual attire. Smart casual can be thought of as business casual with one casual element.
    • Example: Polo, button down shirt, or a blouse with jeans
    • Example: Khakis with a Charlotte t-shirt
  • Pay a $75 program fee (paid at the start of the semester in August). The program fee helps underwrite the costs of the program, including but not limited to the retreat costs, speaker fees, program workbook, and other materials.
  • Consistently attend the weekly meetings, missing no more than one (1) meeting

Leadership Fellows will be offered in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
